Abstract — COMSOL Dbs Electrode Field
Comsol Dbs Electrode Field: Biomedical Engineering, Medical Electronics & Bio-Signal Modeling Integrated Clinical Investigation: Bio-Sensors · Analog Front-Ends (AFE) · Diagnostic Waveforms · DSP Algorithms · ~7232 Words Chapter 1: Electrophysiological Foundations, Action Potentials & Clinical Significance Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is a surgical technique that involves surgically implanting Platinum electrode to create an electric field to activate the targeted nerve cells and fibers with minimized side effects. Important stimulation parameters to monitor include temperature, electric field intensity and the current density. This paper gives a Finite Element Model (FEM) for DBS electrode in monopolar, bipolar and quadripolar configuration and the comparative effect of temperature and current density distribution. This study shows an increase in the tissue temperature to a maximum of 37.16 0C as the electrode segmentation increases. Monopolar electrode configuration provided a better uniformity in the current density distribution at the surface of the electrodes at a lower value than the rest of the configurations.
Sensor Interfacing & Analog Front-End Conditioning
Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is known to alleviate symptoms of some movement disorders and is currently tested for its clinical value in several psychiatric disorders. Although the exact mechanism of DBS is not well understood yet, an activation of white matter structures is the most likely one. The spatial distribution of the electric field originating from implanted DBS electrodes is important. It is sensitive to both the electrode position and also the fiber structure close by. Previous studies have investigated the relation between the electric field and fiber activations. In this study possible electrical field deformations caused by fiber bundles are assessed. Furthermore the effect of fiber bundle properties and their density around the electrode is brought into the model and examined.
