Social Engineering Attack Simulation Tool Using Gophish: Comprehensive Web-Sourced Technical Investigation Exhaustive Research Dossier · Pure Web-Scraped Content: ~4970 Words · Real Software Screenshots: 3 1. Executive Overview & Technical Background Learn how to install, configure, and use Gophish to test your organization's exposure to phishing.
Methods, endpoints, and examples that show how to automate Gophish campaigns Every organization invests heavily in firewalls, endpoint detection, and SIEM platforms. But the most exploited attack surface in enterprise security is not a misconfigured server or an unpatched CVE. It is the human sitting behind the keyboard. Phishing remains the number one initial access vector in data breaches year after year, and the only reliable way to know whether your employees will fall for it is to test them first.
Gophish is an open-source phishing simulation framework that allows security teams to design, deploy, and measure phishing campaigns with the precision of a real attacker. In this guide, we walk through the full Gophish workflow, including installation, campaign setup, template crafting, and result analysis, so you can understand what a professional phishing simulation actually looks like from the inside.
Figure 1: GoPhish | Devpost If your organization needs a managed, expert-led simulation rather than a DIY setup, the team at Redfox Cybersecurity delivers end-to-end phishing assessments as part of a broader red team and penetration testing engagement. Gophish is a purpose-built phishing simulation platform written in Go. Unlike manual phishing setups that require stitching together SMTP servers, tracking pixels, and credential harvesters by hand, Gophish bundles all of these components into a clean web-based dashboard. Security practitioners use it to: The platform is commonly deployed in two contexts: internal red team exercises where the security team tests their own employees, and third-party engagements where an external penetration testing firm like Redfox Cybersecurity runs the simulation on behalf of the client.
Gophish runs on Linux, Windows, and macOS. For operational phishing simulations, a Linux VPS with a dedicated domain is the standard setup. Here is how to get started on a Debian-based system. Figure 2: GoPhish | Devpost Before launching, edit the default config file to bind Gophish to your server's interfaces: Set your admin panel to listen only on localhost for security, and configure your phishing server to listen on port 80 or 443: On first run, Gophish prints a randomly generated admin password to the terminal. Copy it immediately, as it will not be shown again: Access the admin dashboard via your browser at https://127.0.0.1:3333 using an SSH tunnel if working remotely: Figure 3: Phishing Simulation: How It Works & 5 Tools to Get You Started The sending profile defines the SMTP server and the "From" address that recipients will see. For realistic simulations, use a domain that closely resembles the target's own domain or a trusted vendor they interact with.
Test the sending profile by clicking "Send Test Email" and verifying delivery and headers. Use a tool like mail-tester.com to check spam score before launching the campaign. A poorly configured sending profile will land every email in spam and produce zero useful data. This is one reason why organizations working with Redfox Cybersecurity for phishing assessments get more accurate results, because their team handles domain aging, DKIM/SPF/DMARC configuration, and deliverability tuning as part of the engagement.
The quality of your email template determines whether your campaign produces actionable data or gets ignored. Effective phishing templates share a few characteristics: they create urgency, they impersonate a trusted sender, and they contain a plausible call to action. Here is an example of a credential harvesting template targeting an IT helpdesk password reset scenario: Notice the use of Gophish's template variables: {{.FirstName}} , {{.Email}} , and {{.URL}} . These are automatically populated per recipient using the data in your target group, making each email appear personalized.
The landing page is what recipients see after clicking the phishing link. Gophish allows you to import any existing webpage directly into the landing page editor: After importing, Gophish strips non-essential scripts and rewrites form actions to post credentials back to your Gophish server. Enable "Capture Submitted Data" and optionally enable "Capture Passwords" if the rules of engagement permit it.
For post-submission behavior, configure a redirect to the legitimate login page so users assume they simply entered their password incorrectly. This avoids tipping off the target that a simulation is underway. Upload this file under Users and Groups to create a named group. You can segment groups by department, seniority level, or access privilege to compare phishing susceptibility across the organization.
Once your sending profile, email template, landing page, and target group are ready, navigate to Campaigns and create a new campaign: The "Send Emails By" field staggers delivery across the time window, preventing all emails from arriving simultaneously, which could trigger alert correlation in a mature SOC environment.
The results breakdown reveals far more than a simple click rate. You can correlate click behavior against job title, department, or time of day to understand your highest-risk user populations. If your organization falls into the first or second category, a professional red team engagement can go beyond simulation and demonstrate full attack chains from phishing to domain compromise. Redfox Cybersecurity offers exactly this, combining phishing simulations with lateral movement, privilege escalation, and full adversary emulation to show the real blast radius of a successful phish.
Some email security gateways and sandboxes will automatically click links in emails to detonate potential payloads. This creates false positives in your campaign data, inflating click rates. To filter bot clicks from real human clicks, add a JavaScript-based bot detection layer to your landing page: This redirects automated scanners to an innocuous page while serving the phishing landing page only to real browser sessions.
To improve inbox placement, configure your SMTP relay to add proper headers and ensure your phishing domain has the following DNS records set before launch: For large-scale red team operations, Gophish exposes a REST API that allows programmatic campaign management: This allows you to script multi-wave campaigns where different pretexts are deployed to different groups over a scheduled period, which is standard practice in enterprise red team engagements.
Phishing simulations must be authorized in writing before any campaign is launched. Rules of engagement should define the scope of the simulation, the acceptable pretexts, whether credential capture is permitted, and how data will be stored and destroyed after the engagement. Running unauthorized phishing simulations, even internally, can violate computer fraud statutes in multiple jurisdictions. Every engagement conducted by Redfox Cybersecurity begins with a formal scoping call and signed authorization to ensure every activity is legally sanctioned and ethically executed.
Gophish is a powerful tool for quantifying human risk within an organization. A well-executed campaign will tell you how many users clicked, who submitted credentials, which departments are highest risk, and whether your security awareness training is working. 2. System Architecture & Core Working Principles What it cannot tell you on its own is what an attacker would actually do with those stolen credentials. That requires a full red team assessment where phishing is just the entry point, and lateral movement, persistence, and data exfiltration simulate the complete attack lifecycle.
That is the difference between a phishing simulation and a penetration test, and it is the difference between knowing you have a problem and knowing exactly how bad it is. If you are ready to go beyond a click rate report and understand your organization's true exposure to social engineering attacks, Redfox Cybersecurity's penetration testing and red team services are designed to give you that complete picture.
From phishing simulations to full adversary emulation, the team brings the methodology, tooling, and reporting to turn assessment results into a defensible security roadmap. Protect your people before attackers exploit them. Explore Redfox Cybersecurity's services today. The hardest part of red teaming is not exploitation. It is writing, listening, and translating findings into decisions people act on.
Here is why communication is the most overlooked red team skill. Learn how phishing simulations work, what metrics to track, and how to run one effectively to reduce human risk in your organization. Discover how red team and blue team operations work in practice, with real tools, tactics, and techniques to strengthen your organisation's security posture.

GoPhish is an open-source phishing simulation framework built for security professionals. It lets you run realistic phishing campaigns to test and train users against social engineering attacks. Before running, you can customize config.json to change ports, TLS settings, and listener addresses. On first launch, GoPhish prints the auto-generated admin credentials to the terminal. Note them down — the password is only shown once.
The phishing server runs on port 80 by default. The admin panel runs on port 3333 (HTTPS with self-signed cert). A Sending Profile tells GoPhish which SMTP server to use for sending emails. In this lab, Gmail's SMTP was used. I Gmail App Password: Google blocks regular passwords for third-party SMTP. Generate an App Password from your Google Account → Security → App Passwords. Spoiler / ethics: for lab use only. Do not deploy this against real users or networks you don’t own or have explicit permission to test. Phishing is illegal and harmful outside of authorized environments. Open the GoPhish dashboard in your attacker VM (e.g. http://localhost:3333 or http://
Tip: use a throwaway lab account and app passwords — keep credentials isolated to the lab. From the target VM or another host, open the received email and click the phishing link. Confirm the browser address bar shows your attacker IP (this confirms redirection to your hosted page). In GoPhish, open the campaign details and expand the drop-down — captured credentials and metadata (IP, user-agent, time) will be visible.

INTRODUCTION Phishing remains the #1 initial access vector in real-world attacks. As a security professional, simulating these attacks in a controlled environment is one of the most effective ways to train employees and identify gaps. In this article, I walk through the complete technical setup of a phishing simulation campaign — from domain registration to HTTPS delivery — using tools available to any security researcher.
3. Software Implementation, Frameworks & Protocols Before setting up GoPhish for phishing simulations, ensure you have the following requirements in place: This setup should only be used for authorized security testing and awareness training . Unauthorized phishing attacks are illegal.
This is where 90% of beginners fail. If your DNS is wrong, your emails will never reach the inbox. Maps your domain name to your server's IP address. When someone visits domain.com , DNS checks this record and sends them to your pubic IP (your EC2). Without it, the domain goes nowhere. Tells receiving mail servers which servers are authorised to send email from your domain. If someone else tries to send email pretending to be mail@domain.com , SPF fails and the email gets flagged.
SPF tells receiving mail servers which servers are allowed to send email on behalf of your domain. Without it, you're spam. Adds a cryptographic signature to every outgoing email. The receiver verifies it using your public key in DNS. If the email was modified in transit, the signature breaks and the email is flagged. DKIM adds a cryptographic signature to your outgoing email. Gmail and Outlook use this to verify authenticity.
Sets the policy for what happens when SPF or DKIM checks fail. p=none = just monitor, p=quarantine = send to spam, p=reject = block completely. You also get reports on who's trying to spoof your domain. Note : you can setup up in digital ocean or any cloud preferred by you all you need is full control to install and make necessary changes when required this is important because our gophish will be running here.
II IMPORTANT: Never expose the admin panel to 0.0.0.0. Bind it only to 127.0.0.1 (localhost). Use SSH tunneling to access it remotely: Note : You can access this page from your windows/local host locally only after ssh tunneling. After successfully setting up GoPhish and logging into the admin panel, the next step is to understand how each component works and how to configure a complete phishing simulation campaign.

Learn how to build, launch, and analyze a complete phishing campaign. We use Gophish for email delivery and tracking, and the Social-Engineer Toolkit (SET) for cloning login portals to harvest credentials.
Gophish is an open-source phishing framework designed for businesses and penetration testers. While Gophish handles the emails, the Social-Engineer Toolkit (SET) excels at cloning websites perfectly to trick users into entering their passwords. SET will now download the HTML, CSS, and JS of the Microsoft login page, modify the forms to point back to your server, and start an Apache web server on port 80. Anyone visiting your IP will see a perfect clone of Microsoft.
Once the campaign is launched, monitor the Gophish dashboard. It will track the funnel in real-time: A complete, documented phishing simulation lab built for security awareness testing and educational purposes — accessible to colleagues anywhere via ngrok tunneling. This project is strictly for educational and authorized security awareness testing purposes only. Unauthorized phishing is illegal under computer fraud and cybercrime laws in most jurisdictions. All testing documented here was performed in a personal lab environment using accounts the author personally owns, and shared only with consenting colleagues for awareness training. Never use these techniques against individuals or organizations without explicit written authorization .
This project documents the end-to-end build of a phishing simulation lab using GoPhish and Ngrok . The goal was to understand how phishing simulations work in order to train colleagues on how to identify and avoid phishing attacks. Ngrok was added to expose the local GoPhish phish server to the internet, allowing colleagues outside the local network to participate in the simulation from anywhere.
GoPhish runs the phish server on port 80 by default. Ngrok handles HTTPS externally, so no SSL config is needed inside GoPhish for this setup. Template Name: IT Password Reset Alert Subject: [Action Required] Your Password Expires in 24 Hours After submitting credentials, targets are redirected to Stay Safe Online — a cybersecurity awareness resource from the National Cybersecurity Alliance. This completes the educational loop naturally.
II GoPhish stores captured passwords as cleartext in gophish.db . Always delete this file after testing. Ngrok exposes the local GoPhish phish server (port 80) to the internet so colleagues can access it from anywhere. The initial campaign used http://192.168.3.--- — a local network IP. This only works for devices on the same WiFi. Ngrok replaces this with a public HTTPS URL that works from anywhere in the world.
II Important: On the free plan, the ngrok URL changes every time you restart it. Always update the GoPhish campaign URL after restarting ngrok. Keep the ngrok terminal open for the entire duration of the simulation. 4. Practical Deployment, Analysis & Case Studies Ngrok also provides a local web inspector to see every request hitting your phish server: The ngrok URL replaced the original local IP http://192.168.3.--- — this was the critical fix that made the simulation accessible to external colleagues.
II Never leave gophish.db on your machine after a simulation. It stores all captured credentials unencrypted. Hands-on phishing simulation project using GoPhish and Ngrok — covering setup, campaign execution, real-time results analysis, and security awareness training. Gophish is an open-source phishing toolkit, released under the MIT License , designed for businesses and penetration testers. It provides the ability to quickly and easily set up and execute phishing engagements and security awareness training.
In this article, I will explain how to set up and manually run a phishing simulation. This article will also explain some pitfalls I experienced while setting up the simulation. Phishing is a type of social engineering attack often used to steal user data, including login credentials and credit card numbers. It occurs when an attacker, masquerading as a trusted entity, dupes a victim into opening an email, instant message, or text message.
While there have been many attempts to mitigate phishing attacks, it is still the topmost way attackers get into networks and organizations, according to recent studies . There are even ways of bypassing MFA , one of the ways that makes phishing harder, which I will demonstrate in a later article. There are several tools used to perform attacks but, in this article, I am going to demonstrate how to set up Gophish ,which is one of the best fishing frameworks used by security professionals.
I will describe all the technical steps taken in case you wish to do test your company’s defenses. I would emphasize here, please ensure you have the authority from the correct people in your organization before emulating anything I describe here. While I am happy to respond to any questions, do not blame me if you get fired I There is no restriction on where to get a domain name. However, there are a few considerations you should make before purchasing one. I will highlight a few.
For the domain, the more similar to the original the better. We could use homoglyphs or permutations of the original domain. We can also consider fuzzy matches, that is using capital letters to imitate the normal ones. For example: example is equal to exampIe but the ‘i’ is in capital, etc. Also keep in mind that we will need to wait to not make the domain suspicious for being newly created.
As for the domain registrar, there is no preference really, so long as they allow you to edit DNS records, you will be good to go. I prefer using Namecheap of GoDaddy , but of course the preference is yours. You could also consider getting an expired domain from expireddomains . This has the advantage of ensuring the domain has been online for some time and has a better reputation. This will help you minimize flagging newly registered domains as mentioned earlier.
This will be the server hosting your gophish framework. While it is possible to host gophish locally on your PC and do the magic of port forwarding, there are disadvantages to this. Phishing campaigns sometime take a long time to complete, or you might want to run them for as long as you can to maximize the impact. This would be limited to the case of personal PCs or laptops. Also, doing the port forwarding might end up exposing your public IP address or services that are running on your network. For this reason, I do not recommend that.
There are several choices for VSP (virtual private server). I have personally used AWS, Azure DigitalOcean , Linode and Vultr . All the providers work well if you are sure your SMPT traffic will not be blocked. (Will address this briefly). My preference here will be AWS, which I will be using in this blog but feel free to pick any that suits your need and that is affordable. The disadvantage of using the marketplace is that it can get expensive quickly and the cost is not covered by credits if you have a promotion or sponsorship. Besides, the version is a little bit outdated.
2. The second option is to spin up a bare Ubuntu server and install gophish on it. We can also do the hardening by ourselves. Here are the steps of getting an Ubuntu server up and running: Click on Launch Instance . You may want to change the region to a different one if you wish as highlighted. This is usually the thing that makes it harder to use gophish, or at least, that has been giving me problems whenever I was trying to set up a phishing campaign for the following reasons.
After trying out the several options available, my preference is using a cloud-based SMTP provider that allows you to send email without having to maintain email servers. This removes the hassle of setting up your own mail server or using multiple cloud providers in a single campaign. Also, the reputation of these services is high and so the chances of your mail landing into someone’s inbox are quite high.
While there are many services out there, I have tried the following and they work quite well. Amazon SES by default has restrictions on all accounts and you will need to request the removal of this. The entire process was quite hectic for me, and I got frustrated along the way, so I opted for something else. I have tried both Sendgrid and Mailgun and they work well. I will be demonstrating using mailgun but feel free to use sendgrid. SendGrid interface was just a little bit confusing for me.
Mailgun needs to verify that we own the domain. So, we need to add the DNS records provided. Once the domain is verified, select SMTP as the preferred way of sending emails for you to be able to obtain SMTP credentials. It is important to note that MailGun will only allow you to add domains only if the credit card verification is successful.
Now that we have our requirements ready, we can now set up gophish on our Ubuntu instance. git clone [https://github.com/gophish/gophish.git](https://github.com/gophish/gophish.git) The default username is admin, and the password can be found from the logs after running the gophish binary. You will be asked to change this once you log in for the first time Now that our instance is up and running, let us set up the domain and SSL certificate that we will be using.
Notice we can access the admin portal on our port but still using an invalid SSL certificate. So, we need to configure the SSL certificate. We will use Certbot to make things easier. Execute the following instruction on the command line on the machine to ensure that the certbot command can be run. If you are comfortable with stopping your webserver, then run this command to get a certificate.
If you have a webserver that is already using port 80 and do not want to stop it while Certbot runs, run this command, and follow the instructions in the terminal. 5. Performance Evaluation & Extended Technical Observations Copy the generated public and private keys to your gophish folder. Make sure to rename them to something you will remember.
Re-edit your config file and replace the public and private keys with the ones generated as shown. You can use the certificate for both the admin dashboard and the domain itself. To confirm that your site is set up properly, visit https://yourwebsite.com:PORT/ in your browser and look for the lock icon in the URL bar.
