Abstract — Occupancy Based Lighting IoT
Occupancy Based Lighting Iot Comprehensive Technical Investigation & Design Architecture · Prepared for Research & Evaluation 1. Executive Overview & Research Problem Statement The escalating global demand for energy necessitates the development of intelligent systems to mitigate consumption in commercial and residential buildings, where lighting constitutes a significant portion of operational expenditure. This paper presents the design, implementation, and evaluation of a cost-effective, IoT-enabled smart lighting system for realtime, directional occupancy counting and automated energy management. The system architecture leverages a dual Passive Infrared (PIR) sensor array to detect both the presence and direction of motion, enabling an accurate count of occupants within a defined space. An Arduino Uno microcontroller processes the sensor data and executes the control logic, while an ESP8266 Wi-Fi module facilitates seamless data transmission to the ThingSpeak cloud platform for remote monitoring and analysis. Experimental data collected during a monitored period demonstrates the system’s efficacy, achieving an occupancy-driven lighting duty cycle of 56.5%, which corresponds to an estimated 43.5% in energy savings compared to continuous operation. This work provides a replicable and open-source framework for granular occupancy monitoring, offering a practical solution for energy conservation in smallto medium-sized spaces through intelligent automation.
Operational Methodology & Framework
An embedded IoT-based smart lighting system that automatically controls a 220V AC lighting load based on human occupancy and ambient light conditions . The system uses an ESP8266 NodeMCU (ESP-12E) as the main controller, an HC-SR501 PIR sensor for motion/occupancy detection, a GL5528 LDR for ambient-light sensing, and a 5V active-LOW relay module for controlling the AC lighting load.
Experimental Findings & Validation
The system also provides remote monitoring and manual control through the Blynk IoT platform . Unnecessary operation of lights in unoccupied or sufficiently bright spaces can lead to avoidable energy consumption. This project implements an embedded control system that automatically operates a lighting load based on two primary conditions: The ESP8266 reads the sensor inputs, processes the conditions according to the programmed control logic, and controls the relay accordingly.
