Abstract

Fire incidents in industrial and commercial facilities demand fast, reliable detection across multiple zones. A PLC-based multi-channel fire detection system provides structured monitoring, clear zone identification and programmable response logic suitable for academic and demonstration use.

This project integrates a programmable logic controller with smoke, temperature and/or flame sensors on several input channels. Ladder logic evaluates sensor states, latches alarms, drives zone LEDs or lamps, activates a buzzer/siren and can energise relay outputs for external devices. The design emphasises industrial wiring practices, I/O mapping and safety-oriented programming.

It is an excellent final-year project for students in Mechatronics, Electrical & Electronics, Instrumentation, Industrial Automation and related disciplines.

Working Principle

  • Smoke, heat or flame sensors continuously monitor assigned zones/channels.
  • Sensor outputs are wired to PLC digital (or analog) inputs with proper isolation.
  • Ladder logic detects active channels, latches zone alarms and drives indicators.
  • Common alarm output (buzzer/siren) and optional relays activate on any or selected faults.
