Automated sorting of metallic and non-metallic objects is a common industrial requirement in packaging, recycling and quality control. Combining a conveyor, metal detection sensor and PLC-controlled reject mechanism provides a practical demonstration of sensor-based sorting.

This project implements a PLC-based sorting system in which objects travel on a conveyor. An inductive proximity (metal) sensor detects metallic items. Ladder logic times the object and activates a pneumatic or motorised reject actuator to divert metal pieces into a separate bin while non-metal items continue to the main outlet. The design covers conveyor drive, sensor interfacing, PLC programming, reject actuation and industrial-style panel wiring — ideal for EEE, ECE, Mechatronics and Industrial Automation students.

Abstract

Manual sorting of mixed metallic and non-metallic components is slow and error-prone. Automated conveyor systems with metal detection improve throughput and consistency in industrial packaging, scrap sorting and quality-control lines.

This project develops a PLC Based Sorting System Using Metal Detection. Objects move on a belt conveyor past an inductive proximity sensor. When a metallic object is detected, the PLC starts a timed sequence and energises a reject actuator (pneumatic cylinder or motorised diverter) to push the object into a reject bin. Non-metallic objects continue to the accept chute. Key subsystems include conveyor drive, metal sensor interfacing, ladder-logic sequencing, reject actuation and status indication. The system demonstrates industrial sorting automation suitable for academic evaluation.

It is an excellent final-year project for Electrical, Electronics, Mechatronics and Industrial Automation Engineering students, combining sensors, PLC programming and practical material handling.

Working Principle

  • Conveyor motor runs continuously or under PLC start/stop control; objects travel past the sensor zone.
  • Inductive metal sensor switches when a metallic object enters its sensing range.
  • PLC ladder logic records the detection, applies a transport delay (timer), then activates the reject actuator for a fixed duration.
  • Metal objects are diverted to the reject bin; non-metal objects pass to the main outlet. Indicators show system status.
