Design and Fabrication of Ground Marking Machine

Mechanical fabrication final year project with complete documentation support.

Marking straight lines on sports grounds, roads and parking areas by hand is slow and inconsistent. This project develops a compact, wheeled ground marking machine that applies paint or chalk powder in uniform, continuous lines.

The machine features a mild-steel chassis with wheels, a paint/chalk tank, a controlled discharge nozzle or roller, and a handle for operator guidance. Line width and flow rate can be adjusted, making it suitable for football fields, cricket pitches, athletic tracks and road marking applications.

Abstract

Accurate ground marking is essential for sports fields, roads and industrial areas. Traditional manual methods using ropes and brushes are labour-intensive and produce uneven lines. A purpose-built marking machine improves speed, consistency and operator comfort.

This project designs and fabricates a simple, robust ground marking machine consisting of a wheeled chassis, a storage tank for paint or chalk, a flow-controlled discharge system (nozzle or roller) and a guiding handle. The operator pushes the machine along the desired path while the mechanism deposits a continuous, uniform line.

It is an ideal final-year Mechanical Engineering project demonstrating chassis design, material selection, flow control and practical fabrication skills.

Working Principle

  • Paint or chalk powder is filled into the tank mounted on the chassis.
  • The operator pushes the machine; wheels roll freely on the ground.
  • A valve or gravity-fed nozzle/roller releases the marking material at a controlled rate.
  • Line width is set by nozzle size or roller width; straight guides help maintain accuracy.

Advantages

  • Faster and more uniform marking than manual methods.
  • Adjustable line width and material flow for different applications.
  • Simple, low-cost design using mild steel and standard components.
  • Suitable for sports grounds, roads, parking lots and playgrounds.

Challenges

  • Ensuring consistent material flow without clogging (especially with chalk).
  • Maintaining straight-line accuracy on uneven surfaces.
  • Balancing tank capacity, weight and manoeuvrability.
  • Selecting corrosion-resistant materials for paint contact parts.
