Abstract

Material handling is a core activity in manufacturing and logistics. Forklifts are essential for moving palletized loads, yet full-size machines are costly and complex for student projects. A scaled 2-wheel-drive forklift provides an excellent platform to study drive systems, lifting kinematics, structural design and control.

This project presents the design and fabrication of a compact two-wheel-drive forklift intended for warehouse-style applications. The vehicle uses dual DC geared motors for differential drive and steering, a vertical mast with powered lift (lead-screw, chain or hydraulic), and a fork carriage. Students gain practical experience in chassis design, power transmission, load stability and mechatronic integration.

It is an ideal final-year project for mechanical, mechatronics and industrial engineering students interested in industrial vehicles and material-handling systems.

Working Principle

  • Two independently driven rear (or front) wheels provide propulsion and differential steering.
  • Operator or remote control commands forward, reverse and turning via motor speed differential.
  • Lift motor or actuator raises/lowers the mast and fork assembly to engage loads.
  • Counterweight or chassis design maintains stability under rated load conditions.
