Hydraulic Cylinder Liner Puller Project

Mechanical & Hydraulic tool fabrication final year project with complete documentation support.

Cylinder liners in diesel and heavy engines must occasionally be removed for overhaul or replacement. Mechanical impact methods risk damage to the block and liner. A hydraulic liner puller applies controlled force for safer, more precise extraction.

This project designs and fabricates a Hydraulic Cylinder Liner Puller that uses a hydraulic cylinder or jack to generate the necessary pull force, together with a rigid frame, puller arms and adapters that engage the liner. The design covers force calculation, frame rigidity, hydraulic circuit and operator safety — ideal for Mechanical, Automobile and Production Engineering students.

Abstract

Removal of cylinder liners from engine blocks is a critical overhaul operation. Conventional mechanical pullers or impact methods can damage the liner seat or block. A hydraulic liner puller provides controllable force and reduces the risk of damage.

This project develops a Hydraulic Cylinder Liner Puller in which a hydraulic cylinder (or jack) generates the extraction force. A rigid fabricated frame, adjustable arms and adapter plates engage the liner so that the hydraulic force pulls it axially out of the bore. Key design aspects include force requirement estimation, structural strength of the frame and arms, hydraulic pressure selection, and safe operation procedures. The unit demonstrates practical application of hydraulics and machine design suitable for academic evaluation.

It is an excellent final-year project for Mechanical, Automobile, Production and Manufacturing Engineering students, combining fabrication, hydraulic systems and workshop tooling concepts.

Working Principle

  • Adapter or puller plate is positioned to engage the top or bottom of the cylinder liner.
  • Hydraulic cylinder or jack is actuated via hand or power pump to generate pull force.
  • Force is transmitted through the frame and arms, extracting the liner axially from the block.
  • Pressure gauge allows monitoring of applied force; controlled release prevents sudden movement.

Advantages

  • Controlled hydraulic force reduces risk of damage to liner and engine block.
  • Higher extraction force available compared to pure mechanical leverage methods.
  • Suitable for demonstration of hydraulic power transmission and tool design.
  • Useful workshop aid for engine overhaul training and small repair facilities.

Challenges

  • Accurate force estimation and selection of cylinder capacity.
  • Frame and arm rigidity under high tensile loads.
  • Proper alignment and secure engagement with the liner.
  • Hydraulic sealing, hose integrity and operator safety during high-pressure operation.
